An enhancement to the basic GPS signal known as Differential GPS (DGPS) provides much higher precision and increased safety in its coverage areas for maritime operations. Governments and industrial organizations around the world are working together to develop performance standards for Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems, which use GPS and/or DGPS for positioning information. In addition to the current GPS civilian service, the United States is committed to implementing two additional civilian signals. In some regions of the world, satellite signals are augmented, or improved for special aviation applications, such as landing planes during poor visibility conditions. In those cases, even greater precision operations are possible.

The good news for the aviation community is that GPS is being constantly improved and modernized. A main component of the ongoing civilian modernization effort is the addition of two new signals. These signals complement the existing civilian service. The first of these new signals is for general use in non-safety critical applications. The second new signal will be internationally protected for aviation navigational purposes. This additional safety-of-life civilian signal will make GPS an even more robust navigation service for many aviation applications.

Those aviation authorities that are moving forward with GPS have observed and documented reductions in flight time, workload, and operating costs for both the airspace user and service provider. GPS also serves as an essential component for many other aviation systems, such as the Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS) that has proven successful in reducing the risk of Controlled Flight into Terrain, a major cause of many aircraft accidents.

3. Know the basics

a. Screen size, on board maps and POIs
This is an important factor in choosing the correct GPS device. The current appealing mark for the displays is 4.3 inches and most of the models out on the market have this. But if reading small texts is a problem, then a larger screen is better. The problem with large screens is that it will use up a lot of space on the dashboard.

Practically almost all of the GPS navigation units have the map of the United States preloaded in them. Some include Canada and Mexico. If there is a need for extra maps, this can be bought from the manufacturers. Just be sure to keep the maps updated.

Every GPS also contains POI (points of interests) databases together with the maps. The size of the database varies among different units. Get hands on reviews to know which one is the best.

b. Voice Control and other extras
Most of the newer models have incorporated hands-free devices to prevent road accidents. Some even have text-to-speech included (a talking GPS).

c. Live Traffic Data
This feature helps the navigators avoid traffic jams, one of the inconveniences they experience.

These are just some of the features a person needs to know before buying a GPS device. For the newest GPS reviews, evaluate the new model first. Never purchase GPS units without looking around first.

Unit works great, good as new. Don't waste your time looking for the TomTom Home DVD or product code card. They're not in the box. Amazon.com customer service, from Bangladesh or Calcutta it seems, is CLUELESS! Instead of having the mfr. send the missing items from their product description, they wanted the "complete" unit (uhhh...what part of missing items make up complete????) returned to them!!?? I had already spent hours updating and enhancing from TomTom's website upon receipt, but that went in one ear and out the other. Oh, and if you bought it a couple days ago for $129.99 with a $30 rebate, they're $99.99 now, no rebate necessary. I guess that's okay because CS rep. "Niti" in very broken English said the rebate check from the form I filled out a couple days ago would be here in a week. LMAO!!! The rebate center says 10-12 weeks. Unit is five stars, Amazon.com CS one star. (It was a live body or a zero for CS would be appropriate!) Caveat Emptor!!

The (free) traffic update feature has already saved me time on several trips. Interface is intuative, love the ability to associate my own pictures with “Favourite” locations. My son especially loves the “Black Pearl” as the ‘car’ icon.

This might be a good product, but the documentation is lousy.

Not only does it NOT come with a manual, but when you go to the Garmin site to download a “current” manual, it covers multiple products, and is designed to print on 4.75″ square paper. Don’t know about you, but my printer doesn’t use 4.75″ paper.

Nothing like buying a new $300 product and having to print your own 60 page manual! Thanks a lot, Garmin! Good job saving 15 cents!

This is my first portable GPS navigator and I’m not quite sure what more you really need. Honestly, this provides all the features you can reasonably use…anything more seems a lot like needless luxury. oh, BTW: manual shmanual…does not knock a great product to 1 star.

5 Stars Great GPS with advanced functionality
The 265WT is (literally) THE way to go! It’s an easy-to-use GPS. It has voice turn-by-turn instructions (including street names), free FM traffic for life!, and hands-free Bluetooth capability. The graphics are great too. The antenna is built in and very sensitive.

The FM traffic is a great feature, and unlike other models, it’s free for life with the 265WT. While commuting, I can easily see where traffic is congested or stopped, and my Nuvi 265WT routes me around it. Isn’t technology great!

For the price (purchased on Amazon <$300), the 265WT is a great value considering the advanced functionality. I can’t think of a better GPS with all of the features I need and will frequrently use. The hands-free Bluetooth speaker quality is okay, but not great.

Note: Like all Nuvi’s, the 265WT is fairly intuitive to use, so you won’t need a printed manual. You can download a PDF manual from the Garmin website. Garmin saves lots of paper annually by not including a printed manual with the unit. Way to go Garmin!

4 Stars Great Unit for the $$
I’m really happy with this as my first GPS unit. I haven’t fully explored all the bells and whistles but it was very easy to get this going and start using it out of the box. The turn-by-turn voice directions are great, the screen is easy to read and the voice is very easy to understand. So far it has been very accurate everywhere I’ve gone with it.

I have enough MP3 players so I don’t really care about that functionality and didn’t want to pay for it. I haven’t tried the Bluetooth speakerphone yet but don’t really expect to hear high-quality voice from a GPS and I have a Supertooth already. It’s nice to have either way but I doubt I’ll use it much.

I would have given this 5 stars but I have to agree with others that the documentation is almost non-existent. Also I found the process of loading favorites a bit confusing at first. But these are minor issues and don’t detract from the performance or value. Overall this is a great unit if you want voice directions, wide screen, and integrated traffic reporting.
